China International Railway trains help Yunnan port economy run at full speed

China-Myanmar

The Sino – Burmese cross-border train link is a part of China’s Silk route projectnew freight train starting its first journey to Myanmar on 23 May 2022.

The new Sino – Myanmar route (Chongqing-Lingchang-Myanmar) International Railway departs from the Chongqing port of Yueqing station in Chongqing on May 23, representing the launch of the new Sino-Burmese route (Chongqing-Lingchang-Myanmar). The freight train is said to carry 60 standard containers which transport heavy machinery, equipment, electronic accessories, and car and motorcycle spare parts.

The train will arrive in Mandalay – the capital city of upper Myanmar 15 days later through the Lingchang border checkpoint in Yunnan Province.

It is estimated that the shipping time between Chung Ching and Myanmar will be 20 days shorter than the traditional method, which will reduce the capital flow of goods by 20%.

China-Laos

The China-Laos Railway, connecting China's Kunming in Yunnan province and Laos's capital city Vientiane, has built up an efficient transportation channel between China and ASEAN countries, with logistics costs greatly reduced and regional economy further boosted.

The 1,035-kilometer line opened on 3 Dec 2021 and the average speed can reach up to 200 kilometers per hour. Communication equipment, daily necessities, fresh flowers and vegetables are exported from China to Southeast Asia through the line, with agricultural products, rubber, potash fertilizer and iron ore sent back.

Apart from traditional international freight trains, the China-Laos Railway introduced the upgraded Lancang-Mekong Express with cold chain service, to meet the diversified demands in cross-border transportation.

Running at about 120 kilometers per hour, the Express takes only 26 hours from Kunming directly to Vientiane, the line has already become the first choice of goods with higher time limit requirements in transportation, such as fruits, vegetables and flowers.

China-Vietnam

The first container train linking Vietnam with China has arrived in Hanoi’s Yen Vien station on 25 November 2017, the train departed on November 22 from Huanggang station, Nanchang city, Jiangxi province of China.

It consists of 33 containers of export items from China such as office furniture, food and automobile spare parts.
Afterwards, the train returns back to China with Vietnamese goods including farm produce, minerals and electronic products.

The transportation using the container block train has brought about considerable benefits to customers as it shortens the transport time to only four days instead of 15 days by sea with quick and convenient customs procedures. It also halves the costs compared to road transport.

International railway transportation from China to Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam has become more convenient and faster Yunnan borders Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries, and has unique advantages in developing port economy.

With the continuous improvement of comprehensive transportation conditions in Yunnan, especially With the extension of the three major international railway corridors of China-Vietnam, China-Laos, and China-Myanmar, the "interface" of the external corridor is being improved, the local business environment continues to be optimized, and the flow of people, vehicles, and logistics flows efficiently, radiating and driving countries along the line and surrounding countries

 The effect is increasingly evident.

A total of more than 4,000 meter-gauge Central Asia trains have been operated

In the early morning of August 25, at the Hekou Port of Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the meter-gauge Central Asia train slowly drove out from the Shanshan border station and was sent to Lao Cai, Vietnam through the China-Vietnam meter-gauge railway bridge. The meter-gauge railway Central Asia train from Kaiyuan, China to Haiphong, Vietnam.

Since its inception, as of August 14, a total of  4,025 trains have been operated, and 1.6 million tons of cross-border cargo have been transported, establishing a "reentry and return" international logistics channel between China and Vietnam.

Meter gauge railway refers to a railway with a track gauge of one meter. Relying on the China-Vietnam meter-gauge railway, the meter-gauge Central Asia trains run in both directions from Kaiyuan, China, and Haiphong, Vietnam, and pass through China's Shanshan Port and Vietnam's Lao Cai Port, forming a stable transnational train transportation mode. In order to fully integrate into the "One Belt and One Road" construction, in December 2017, the meter-gauge China-Asia freight train was launched as a "block train" for the first time in international freight trains.

Since the beginning of this year, with the recovery of the world economy, the meter-gauge Central Asia trains have continued to increase their traffic volume, with 2 to 4 trains running steadily every day. The meter-gauge Central Asia train adopts a "five-fix" train method with fixed loading locations, operating routes, train numbers, arrival and departure times, and transportation prices. The transportation is more timely, stable, and convenient, and is deeply loved by China and Vietnam. favored by enterprises.

Dong Wujun, director of the VIPUTRANS Transport Handling Office of the Kunming Bureau of the State Railway, said that at present, the exports of Central Asia trains are mainly chemical fertilizers, and the imports are mainly sulfur. This "re-going and returning" transportation mode effectively avoids the problem of railway transportation.

It also reduces the waste of road resources and greatly reduces the transportation costs of enterprises on both sides. In the five years since the "train train" was launched, the meter-gauge Central Asia train has accounted for 40% of the total meter-gauge international transport between China and Vietnam, and the proportion of imported and exported goods has basically remained the same.

The regularly operated meter-gauge Central Asia trains have formed convenient international logistics and transportation, attracting investment from many enterprises.

“With the development of trade through railway transportation, sea-rail combined transportation and other methods, the import and export volume of goods is increasing year by year, and the economic and trade partners have extended from the original Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other China

Eastern country. In recent years, Honghe Comprehensive Bonded Zone and Hekou Cross-border Economic Cooperation Zone and other large-scale projects have successively settled in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, providing a major channel for international materials to enter Yunnan and local materials to leave the province and abroad.

Two international logistics channels integrated into the national railway network

In Yunnan, the China-Laos Railway international freight train starts from Kunming, Yunnan, and goes directly to Vientiane, Laos. The meter-gauge Central Asia train starts from Kaiyuan, Yunnan, and goes directly to Haiphong, Vietnam. With the Kunming railway hub as the center, the two international logistics channels are interconnected and integrated into the national railway network. Foreign economic and trade cooperation continues to expand, and railways have played an active role. At present, a series of China-Laos international freight trains loaded with Thai durian, mangosteen and other specialty products are entering the country through the Mohan Railway Port in Yunnan and bound for Kunming.

Ming Dynasty, Chengdu, Guangzhou and other major cities. Since the beginning of this year, development along the China-Laos railway has accelerated, with cumulative freight volume and passenger volume increasing by 105.2% and 152.7% respectively year-on-year. Changjiang Shoufujie, Hekou North Station, Kaiyuan Depot, Kunming Railway Bureau, in terms of passenger transportation, it only takes 4 and a half hours to travel from Kunming to Hekou North Railway Station. The compression of time and space speeds up the flow of passengers, capital, and information; in terms of freight, they give full play to the large volume and low freight rates of railways. , fast timeliness and green environmental protection and other advantages, it has created a logistics channel between China and ASEAN countries and promoted trade growth with related countries.

Yunnan Province seizes the major opportunity of national support to accelerate the construction of radiation centers for South and Southeast Asia, accelerates the pace of port construction, and strives to expand and strengthen the port economy. It is understood that in the first half of the year, Yunnan Province formulated and implemented a three-year action for port construction and allocated 900 million yuan in financial funds to support the construction of three international port cities, including Mohan, Ruili, and Hekou, and continue to improve China's (Yunnan) The "single window" function of international trade continuously optimizes port customs clearance capabilities and enables 24-hour business appointment processing. Hekou and Mohan ports have established "green channels" for rapid customs clearance of agricultural and sideline products, adopting a fast customs clearance and release model of immediate arrival, immediate inspection and immediate release, which has greatly improved customs clearance efficiency and further reduced the overall import and export cargo volume.

The customs clearance time brings together the synergy of development.

In the first half of this year, Yunnan Province’s port customs clearance has steadily recovered and customs clearance efficiency has improved.

The rate continues to increase, with port import and export freight volume and value increasing year-on-year respectively. 51.3%, 21.8%.

The expansion and modernization of railway transportation networks in Asia are carving pathways to previously untapped trade opportunities. A paramount example is the burgeoning international railway transportation from China to Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. As businesses across the world look to explore these dynamic markets, an understanding of this essential railway transportation corridor is crucial.
