Special requirements of ports in Latin America

International shipping will often encounter bill of lading (BL) problems, regardless of export or import, different countries and destination ports have different requirements for bills of lading, especially developing countries such as most countries in South America, which have special requirements for bills of lading.

In general, Latin American ports basically require original bills of lading, and do not accept Surrendered and Seaway Bills.

Mexico:

Shipper/Consignee/Notify’s phone/fax/Tax ID must be displayed on the ocean bill of lading. Telex and sea waybills are accepted, but the destination port is not accepted.

Guatemala:

Telex and sea waybills are not accepted, but the destination port is accepted.

Honduras:

Telex and sea waybills are not accepted, only the original bill of lading is issued, and the destination port is accepted.

El Salvador:

Telex and sea waybills are not accepted, but the destination port is accepted.

Nicaragua:

Telex and sea waybills are not accepted, but the destination port is accepted.

Costa Rica:

The freight must be shown on the ocean bill of lading, telex and sea waybills are not accepted, but the destination port is accepted.

Jamaica:

Telex and sea waybill are accepted, but not at the port of destination.

Dominica:

The freight must be shown on the ocean bill of lading, and the Tax ID (NIT NO) of Shipper/Consignee/Notify. If the product name is a tire, the chassis number and production date must be displayed on the ocean bill of lading. Telex release and sea waybill are not accepted, only the original ocean bill of lading is accepted, and the destination port is accepted.

Panama:

Accept telex, sea waybill and port of destination.

Puerto Rico:

Accept telex, sea waybill and port of destination.

Venezuela:

Consignee/Notify Tax ID is required on the ocean bill of lading. Telex and ocean waybills are not accepted. Only the original ocean bill of lading can be issued and the destination port is accepted.

Colombia:

The name/address/telephone/fax/Tax ID (NITNO) of Consignee/Notify must be displayed on the ocean bill of lading. Consignee must be a local company in Colombia. Telex and ocean waybills are not accepted. Only the original ocean bill of lading is issued and the destination port is accepted. .

Ecuador:

Consignee/Notify Tax ID is required on the bill of lading. Telex and sea waybills are not accepted, but the destination port is accepted.

Peru:

The freight must be shown on the ocean bill of lading, only the original ocean bill of lading is accepted, and the destination port is accepted.

Brazil:

The freight must be shown on the ocean bill of lading, Consignee/Notify Tax ID (CNPJ), HS Code, NCMNO. and tare weight. Telex, ocean waybill and port of destination are not accepted, only the original ocean bill of lading is issued.

Chile:

The ocean bill of lading must show ocean freight, Consignee/Notify Tax ID, telex and ocean waybills are not accepted, only the original ocean bill of lading is issued, and the destination port is accepted.

Argentina:

The HS Code (NCM NO) must be displayed on the ocean bill of lading (select the highest value for multiple product names). The customs stipulates that the HS Code must be displayed on the ocean bill of lading. If it is not displayed, there will be a penalty. Show Shipper/Consignee/Notify's full name, address, telephone/fax/Tax ID (CUIT NO), telex (surrendered) and sea waybill are not allowed, only the original sea bill of lading can be issued, and the destination port is accepted.

Paraguay:

Accept telex, sea waybill and port of destination.

Uruguay:

The ocean bill of lading must display the 4-digit HS Code of all product names, shipper’s name, address, and tax number, Consignee’s name, address, and tax number (RUT NO), and Notify’s name, address, telephone number, etc. Tax number (RUT NO), does not accept telex and sea waybills, but accepts the destination port.
