One in five people in Canada immigrants, 1.2 million people in five years?

In 2016, 21.9% of Canadians were immigrants or permanent residents, up from 19.8% in 2006. However, this proportion is not the highest ever. In 1921, the proportion of Canadian immigrants was as high as 22.3%. Statistics Canada estimates that by 2036, immigrants may account for as much as 30% of Canada's total population. The report said that between 2011 and 2016, Canada received a total of 1.2 million new immigrants, of which 60.3% were classified as “economic” immigrants – nearly half of them came to Canada through the skilled immigration program. The statistics of immigrants going west also show that immigrants are 'introducing' into the plains provinces of Canada in large numbers. In Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the proportion of new immigrants has increased significantly. However, 39% of new immigrants still chose to settle in Ontario, but in 2001 as many as 55.9% of new immigrants chose Ontario. René Houle, a senior analyst at Statistics Canada, said: 'This is not just because of economic conditions, but because some provinces are using provincial and territorial nomination programs to attract immigrants who meet local economic needs.' Big cities are still the most attractive places for immigrants. Statistics report that 56% of immigrants live in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and surrounding areas, while only one-third of the Canadian native population lives in these three major cities. More than 60% of immigrants from Asia and the Middle East have increased significantly. Statistics Canada says that more than 60% of new immigrants come from Asia and the Middle East, which is by far the largest source of immigrants. However, Africa has now surpassed Europe as the second most important source of new immigrants. 13.4% of new immigrants are Africans. In 1981, there were only 4.7% of colored people in Canada. The Bureau of Statistics predicts that by 2036, colored people may account for 33% of the total population.
