Is it important for the declaration of battery-containing products?

Q: Is it important for the declaration of battery-containing products?

A: Of course Yes !

It is very important to declare the presence of chemicals and battery-containing products when shipping goods. This is because some chemicals and batteries can be hazardous and pose a risk to people, animals, and the environment if they are not handled and transported properly.

When shipping goods internationally, there are several regulations that must be followed to ensure the safe transport of hazardous materials. These regulations include the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, and the United Nations (UN) Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.

Under these regulations, shippers are required to declare the presence of hazardous materials in their shipments and label them appropriately. This includes declaring the presence of chemicals and battery-containing products and labeling them with the appropriate UN numbers and hazard symbols.

In addition to complying with these regulations, shippers should also ensure that their goods are properly packaged and labeled to prevent leaks, spills, or other incidents that could result in harm to people or the environment. Properly declaring and handling hazardous materials is critical to ensuring the safe transport of goods and protecting the health and safety of everyone involved in the transportation process.

About lithium batteries or built-in batteries

When shipping goods that contain lithium batteries or built-in batteries, it is mandatory to label them with the appropriate UN number and hazard class. UN3480 and UN3481 are the UN numbers used for lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion battery-powered devices respectively.

The UN3480 label is used for lithium-ion batteries that are shipped separately, while the UN3481 label is used for devices that contain lithium-ion batteries such as laptops, mobile phones, and power banks. Both labels indicate that the package contains lithium-ion batteries and should be handled with care to prevent damage that could result in fire or explosion.

It is important to comply with these labeling requirements when shipping goods with lithium-ion batteries to ensure the safety of everyone involved in the transportation process. Additionally, proper packaging and handling procedures should be followed to minimize the risk of damage to the batteries during transport.

Accident case:

On the morning of March 6, 2023, a container at Shenzhen Shekou Container Terminal (SCT) was suspected to be on fire due to concealment of dangerous goods. According to the photos from the scene, the bottom of the container was burned through and the container was seriously damaged. It poses a serious threat to the safety of port terminal operations, cargo and personnel.

The specific cause of the accident has not yet been known, everything is subject to the official announcement! - Come to China Shipping website

Therefore, for the transportation of chemicals and battery products, it is absolutely necessary to declare truthfully and not conceal it. Otherwise, major accidents and serious consequences will occur.

Properly declaring and handling hazardous materials is critical to ensuring the safe transport of goods and protecting the health and safety of everyone involved in the transportation process.
