Container purchase

According to international standards, second-hand containers have three quality grades: A, B and C. Among them, Class A containers are the best quality and are suitable for occasions where long-term storage and transportation of high-value goods are required; Class B containers are suitable for some medium and long-term storage and transportation of general goods; Class C containers are suitable for some short-term storage and transportation. When transporting secondary cargo.

Things to note when purchasing a container:

1. Understand the appearance damage of second-hand containers. During the use of second-hand containers, it is inevitable that there will be some surface damage, such as rusted steel plates, leaking seams, and loosely sealed doors and windows. When we buy, we need to carefully check the appearance.

2. Understand the internal conditions of second-hand containers. Similarly, during use of second-hand containers, problems such as loose internal structures, damaged locks, and ground damage may also occur. When choosing to purchase a used container, inspect the interior.

Let’s start with a detailed look at standard freight containers.

A standard ISO dry cargo container is 7.8 feet (2.3 meters) wide and 7.9 feet (2.3 meters) high. It comes in two lengths: 20 feet (5.9 meters) and 40 feet (12.03 meters). This is the most popular type of dry cargo container, transporting dry cargo including machinery, grain, paper and electronics.

 20 feet dry cargo container

Inner length 5.9 meters / 19.4 ft

Inner width 2.3 meters / 7.8 ft

Inner height 2.3 meters / 7.8 ft

Self-weight 2,300 kg / 5,071.5 LBS

Load capacity 25,000 kg / 55,126.9 LBS

Volume 33.2 cubic meters / 1,172 cubic feet

This type of container has always been very popular due to its convenient and compact size. They are easy to load and unload on cargo ships and can be used in ports where advanced lifting equipment is not available, and they are also well suited for intermodal transport (by road, rail and cargo ships).

 40 feet dry cargo container

Inner length 12.03 m / 39.5 ft

Inner width 2.3 m / 7.9 ft

Inner height 2.3 m / 7.9 ft

Self-weight 3,750 kg / 8,268.8 LBS

Load capacity 27,600 kg / 61,200 LBS

Volume 67.7 cubic meters / 2,389 cubic feet

The 40-foot standard container is another popular choice for transporting dry goods. They are similar to 20-foot containers, only twice as long.

 40 feet high cube container

Inner length 12.03 m / 39.5 ft

Inner width 2.4 m / 7.9 ft

Inner height 2.70 m / 8.10 ft

Self-weight 3,900 kg / 8,598 LBS

Load capacity 28,600 kg /63,052 LBS

Volume 76.3 cubic meters / 2,694.5 cubic feet

The 40-foot high container is almost identical to the 40-foot dry cargo container, but has more advantages in height. Containers of this size are ideal for transporting goods that are tall or do not fit into a standard container because they do not meet specifications, or if you simply want to fill the container with more cargo.

The difference between standard container and special container

Perhaps you are curious about the difference between a standard container and a special container. Before moving on to the next section, let's clarify some concepts.

Standard containers, or dry cargo containers, are only used to transport dry goods. These containers are made of aluminum or steel and have a set of doors at each end.

Special containers refer to containers modified to meet specific transportation needs.

This type of container includes refrigerated container, plate container and tank container.

Special containers are used for the transport of temperature-sensitive items, liquids and gases, or out-of-limit, irregular cargo.

Open top container

Open top containers have no top. Instead,  these containers cover the cargo with a rain cloth to keep it dry. The open top makes loading heavy and out-of-limit  cargo fast and easy.

If you need to transport goods such as pipes, glass, cables, marble blocks or rebar,  then an open-top container is perfect for you.
